Our final film!

First edit attempt from Curtis cragg on Vimeo.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product.

As you can clearly see from this print screen which I took off of my preliminary task that me and my group clearly did not know what we were doing because we didn't have the actor in the camera in this shot as his head is completely gone and in our current film we try to make sure that the actor is the main focus of the camera at all times because a film wouldn't be too good if you couldn't see the actors head, also from the preliminary task we have learnt that we had to cut each scene better because in our preliminary task its too fast and jumpy so it doesn't look very good and too rushed but in our final film its fast but it allows enough time to get a feel for what is going on. Also since our preliminary task I have matured a lot and learnt how to manage my time a lot more effectively because when I was doing the preliminary task I wasn't taking it very serious and laughing a lot through it, but now when filming I take it serious because when messing around you  could forget key things such as getting your actor in the shot which is what happened in our preliminary task.
Also I have learnt to manage my time well in that we made sure that every week we would either get some filming done or some editing done and we planned it through like that, because if we hadn't then there would of been complete chaos I doubt we would have a finish product.  Finally I believe that the finished product in that we have produced looks a hundred times better than our preliminary task as it is fast, has some action so the audience doesn't get bored and gives you a feel of what the film is about and the sort of things that will go wrong during it.

6. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of making this product.

I have learn many different things in doing this project and one of the main things that I have learnt to use effectively is a cam-corder, before this task I wouldn't even be able to tell you where the on button was and now me and my filming partner have managed to make a piece of work using one. I learnt many different things such as making sure the camera was the right height so that I could remain in the shot and my head wouldn't go out, also from using a cam corder I learnt you need to keep the camera steady hence the reason we used a tri-pod so this helped us to keep our shots steady and not to shake around. Another thing I have learnt when using a camera is the 180 degree rule because if the actor was on one side and then in the next camera shot he was on the other side of the camera this wouldn't look right and the audience would be confused while watching it. So overall using a camera has taught me many things and I am glad I know them now.

The next thing in which this media project has helped me to do is to edit a film sequence because this project I had never really had to properly edit a piece of film so this has been a massive learning curve for me, but i didn't take long to get used to editing film, I just had to make sure that I cut the film in the correct place not to make it look like the film is jumping area and to make it look smooth so that the audience can enjoy it without it looking glitchy or like it doesn't make sense. Being able to edit film is a very handy skill that i believe many people don't know how to do or don't fully understand so being able to do it myself is amazing and a real life skill in which i have taken away from this media project.

And finally this media project has helped me to understand that you can add after effects onto a piece of film and this has been so helpful in making our film, because in some scenes I am walking and without the fades the audience would get bored and lose interest so we put in some fades using after effects and it was very simple to do but I didn't even realise it could be done, so this has definitely helped me in developing my editing skills also, there is also many other after effects that can be used in filming such as cross-fades, flashes (which we used in our piece of film to symbolize the main character remembering the past) and many other things which help to make a piece of work looking smooth.

5. What elements of your text would attract the target audience.

The film as a whole is targeted to males, because of the short action scenes and the violence also how the film has only males as main characters. It is also targeted at males because i believe that a male teenager would like to spend money with a group of friends to watch a film which involves action and a good story line to it. The things which would also attract the target audience is the things in which the main character wears, because the main character is wearing jeans and a t-shirt which is what a typical teenager would wear so they might relate to the character and get attracted to the film. Another prop which will attract the target audience is things like the hammer, because the target audience will know that will be expecting more violence to happen throughout the film because the main character stashes the hammer away, and being a male teenager i know that the target audience will like violence. But the film isn't just about violence and action, it also has an in-depth story line of a teenager who wants to break out of the society he lives in, but the people around him keep bringing him down.
It could attract a few women as there is a troubled character with a bad background which women might enjoy watching. My film will attract its target audience because it includes things in which a typical teenage male would like things such as a good story line, someone that they can relate to and also some action scenes so that they don't  get bored of just speaking throughout the entire film.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product.

The audience for my groups media product is male teenagers because in our film we has a lot of action scenes
also because the leading role is a male actor, we have also decided to target at male teenagers because being one myself I would like to watch a film with a storyline and some action scenes which  keep the film entertaining.
but male teenagers aren't the only audience that we would get because a lot of women love watching drama films as I have found out from asking around, and so I have come to the conclusion that we would have a variety of audience for our film because women like a could storyline and a good plot in the film  with not too much action so they can get into the story. But again we have targeted at male teenagers because they can relate to the character and also a lot of children in these days live in run down areas and mainly in London people don't live the best of lives and have to fight to become good, so this film is based at male teenagers for that reason. We have also decided too base it at male teenagers because when making the film we asked mainly males about what they would think about the idea of the film e.g the questionnaire and the response was positive, also the idea we had when making the film was to mainly involve males during the film, which we have done with the main character being male, and the bullys being male because we didn't want romance in the film because we wanted the film to show realism.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have come to the conclusion that move of the film industry based around dramas is owned by the Americans and most of the the drama films is distributed by Americans so they own most of the film industry based around dramas so if my film were to be published then it would have to be with an American company I believe that my film we be shown in main stream cinema in places such as Vue or Odeon. Summit Entertainment i believe would be the best company to distribute my film because they have distributed films such as "never back down" and that film is a drama with action, so i believe they will have experience with these types of films Summit Entertainment is also a well known company for distributing films such as the twilight series which is a well known film, and it is also a drama so from my research on Summit Entertainment and from looking at the genre of the films in which they have produced i believe that they are a good company to distribute my drama film.
Regulatory rules and guidelines set by the BBFC

The regulatory rules set by the BBFC for a 15 classification state that drug reference may be used during the film but it may not promote taking drugs, it also says that swearing is allowed if it is justified by the context but frequent use isn't acceptable, also violence is acceptable as long as it doesn't dwell on it or it is too gory. So from these rules set by the BBFC i think we have easily managed to get into the 15 category because we have shown violence but we don't dwell on it and it isn't too gory as you don't see a lot of it, and also during the film there is no swearing because the start of the film is in silent, and there is going to be no drug reference throughout the film.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In my film opening there is 3 main roles involved into it, the main character (the troubled teen), the Main bully (who gets hit around the face with the hammer), and another character who is a friend of the main bully and helps  him bully the main character during the school scene. there are several representations of the characters in my film throughout.

The first representation of the main character.

The first representation we get of the main character is that he is being followed/he is being chased or he is running away from something that he has done. the character has a troubled expression his face showing us they he may have a lot on his mind also the character looks very troubled so he may have done something wrong.
The clothes he is wearing is what a teenager would wear and is casual, a t-shirt with jeans which may make us think he is innocent and young which could make us feel sorry for the character and become attached to him.
the character when he was being bullied was shot at a high angle shot showing us that the character is weak and cant defend for himself and the bullies are positioned above the character showing power over the main character. So we feel that the character is sensitive and he doesn't like to be violent and he may not have a lot of friends as no-one is standing up for him because he may be different or smarter than everyone else in the school.

The second representation of the main character.

The second representation we get of the main character is that he can be violent because he has been building up all the anger from when he has been bullied and pushed around and has finally had enough of what the bullies were doing to him and his anger had taken over him and made him do things that are bad, and instantly after he hits the character across the face with the hammer we see that the main character knows he has done wrong from his expression and the way he looks around and doesn't realise what he has done so he runs away hoping no-one will know it was him.

The first representation of the main bully.

The first representation of the main bully is that he is powerful and we see this from the way he stands over the victim (the main character) and also the way that he has a friend which helps him to bully the people he doesn't like, we also notice that the bully is powerful and thinks he is in this scene in the way that he doesn't try to hide the face that he is bullying this character and he is just willingly doing it in the open so that people can see that he is powerful.

The second representation of the main bully

The second representation of the main bully is that he is now the victim and from the short expression we see on his face from when he is about to be hit by the hammer he is weak and it also shows the audience that the bully was only strong because he had friends to help him bully the main character in  the first place.
